Curriculum

The home school band curriculum consists of Ed Sueta, Accent on Achievement and Rubank Advanced Method lesson books, scales, solos, musical terms, band music, and band performances. At more advanced levels, it includes some composing, research papers, and orchestral concert critiques.

Students can achieve the following levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Gold Star, Medalist, Emerald, Ruby, and Diamond.

Each level has different requirements:

  • BRONZE: Finish first Ed Sueta lesson book, memorize first band scale, basic musical term test, basic rhythm test, attend and perform in three band concerts.
  • SILVER: Finish book two, memorize first chroomatic scale (two octaves), intermediate musical term test, intermediate rhythm test, attend and perform in three band concerts.
  • GOLD: Finish book three, perform first solo, musical terms test, rhythm test, intermediate chromatic scale, four major scales memorized, attend and perform in band concerts.
  • GOLD STAR: Finish book four, advanced cchromatic scale, perform solo, four major and four minor scales memorized, musical terms, rhythm test, attend and perform in band concerts.
  • MEDALIST: Finish book five, major solo, six major and six minor scales memorized, advanced rhythm test, musical terms, complete chromatic scale memorized, performances with band.
  • EMERALD through DIAMOND Levels: Standard solo repertoire performance attending contest; some composing for solo, duet, and band; several research papers; advanced rhythm testing; advanced musical terms; musical performances; and orchestral concert critiques.

After passing Silver Level, students will have opportunities to try out for Honor Band and/or Solo Ensemble Contest.
